Tell us a little background about yourself! What does your life outside of the gym look like?
I am a Santa Barbara transplant. We originally moved to Santa Barbara from the LA area in 2008 in pursuit of better employment opportunities. We met Peter and the Prevail team shortly after relocating and have been avid prevailers since. When I’m not in the gym, life is keeping us busy with 3 beautiful children, whom I’m constantly learning from. They teach me how to be a better father and a better person. I’m also a mental health professional and I like to think that I’m serving the community well by helping those struggling with severe mental health and substance use illnesses at our local hospital.
What impact has training at Prevail made in your life?
Training at Prevail helps keep me accountable. It also keeps me motivated. Prevail has given me the motivation and desire to train for long term wellness.
What are you most proud of achieving since training at Prevail?
Consistency and community. It’s easy to establish and maintain positive, healthy relationships with staff and others at Prevail, which makes it enjoyable to show up, regardless of how difficult the day has been or how difficult the workout is going to be. I’m able to have fun while I’m there.
What is your favorite exercise/movement?
My favorite exercise is the trap bar deadlift. I couldn’t do a deadlift when I joined Prevail. Peter wouldn’t let me. But with time and consistency, I was able to get the movement down and see the gains!
Do you have any words of encouragement or tips for somebody new to exercise (or restarting)?
Invest in your health and wellness. Prevail provides an extremely well-rounded approach to training and regardless of your level of experience or knowledge, Prevail has the staff to help you with your goals. Don’t let the gym intimidate you. We all started somewhere.

First of all: Thank you! I’m honored for Prevail’s acknowledgment! Life is busy… and the training offered at Prevail packs a lot of great training in a minimal amount of time. My passion is flying! Being fit allows me confidence and strength, especially in aviation with the rigors of training and testing.
What impact has training at Prevail made in your life?
Prevail is all about QUALITY OF MOVEMENT. This has helped me get stronger and more agile. The instructors/trainers are extremely knowledgeable. This has assured my avoiding injuries while building strength.
What is your favorite exercise/movement?
Pull-ups! They are challenging and humbling. My goal is to do several of them without any assistance. Trainer & instructor-extraordinaire Alexis is making that goal turn into a reality.

Being fit is all about options. The stronger, more flexible, more stable you are, the more open doors you’ll have to other joys of life…in the air and in/on the water.

Tell us a little background about yourself! What does your life outside of the gym look like?
We have been married for 9 years and have two children, a son Jadon (4.5) and daughter Teigan (2.5). Ryan came to Santa Barbara for college and eight years later we met through friends, were quickly married, and Courtney moved down to Santa Barbara from Portland. We love bike rides, beach days, home projects (at least Ryan does) and building skyscrapers with MagnaTiles.
What impact has training at Prevail made in your life?
Courtney: For me, training at Prevail has given me more confidence in lifting weights and building strength. It has helped with postpartum recovery and given me a place to focus on my physical wellness. Kyle has been helpful in challenging me beyond what I think I am capable of.
Ryan: I have been part of Prevail for about 12 years now. Prevail has seen me through many seasons of life, but through it all has helped me to grow and maintain my mobility, strength, and endurance and teach me more about physical health.
What are you most proud of achieving since training at Prevail?
Courtney: Body weight pull-ups and push-ups.
Ryan: Getting up at 5:50 am (okay, 6:00 am) to make it to workout at 6:29am.
What is your favorite exercise/movement?
Courtney: I like squats and bear crawls….I am not a fan of rear foot elevated split squats.
Ryan: I enjoy the rings, handstands, and trap bar deadlifts. I dislike front squats with a 5-second lower.
